The Rubicon Project seems like a neat niche market idea. At first glance, it appears to be a technology solution that matches up advertising space on blogs with the highest paying ad vendor from a list of over 300 suppliers, ranging from Google AdSense to Hispanoclick.
For instance, Google AdWords may be the best ad network choice for a site about bicycles, while HispanoClick might be best for ad inventory on a Hispanic-related Web site.

At first glance, I thought that the individual advertising networks would still pay you and the Rubicon Project would take a small percentage of your clicks. For example, datafeedfile.com provides, well, a data feed for a number of products across various affiliate networks. They don’t charge a fee, however every 4th click uses their affiliate number instead of yours.
Rubicon’s website makes me believe that they receive the money and then pay you appropriately. I’m curious about their minimum payout. There’s a fellow on their forum who said he received his first payment of $1.15 - which was the first time he’s ever earned money from advertising space on blogs. Of course, the minimum payout of Google AdWords has always been a key prohibitor for many small blogs, including this one. However, perhaps Rubicon’s solution of matchmaking between blogs and advertisers will work - if only because of a small minimum payout.
WordPress’s AdSense Manager plugin allows you to directly enter in adsense code as well as alternate advertiser code. I wonder if I’ll be able to use the same plugin with the Rubicon Project code so that it’s an easy transition with my ad supplier.
Bottom line: We’ve sent in an application to receive an invitation to be part of their beta program. We’ll keep you posted on how things go.
