Using Facebook to Promote Your Website
We’re starting to build our web 2.0 webdiggin community by creating profiles at social networking sites and linking the sites. We’re starting with Facebook because my friend told me myspace is so last year.) Here’s what we’ve learned about how to use facebook to create an organic webdiggin community…
- The limited search listing for your personal facebook profile can be found through search engines.I don’t need to add my two cents to a long discussion about facebook making limited public profiles accessible to search engines. I think at one point, more of your facebook profile was open to the search engine spiders, but a google search today for public profiles at facebook only reveals the limited search listing with your name, your friends, and your networks (depending on your privacy settings). To check to see what your facebook profile looks like on Google (and the other search engines), just add your name to the end of this google search.
- Facebook wants you to use your real full name. They get cranky when you try to change it to a business name or something else:
Before confirming your name change request, please read the following.
* Your Facebook profile must be attached to your real name.
* You must include your full name.
* Celebrity names, nicknames, or other fake names are not allowed and will not be approved.
* Obscenity, curses, and swear words are not allowed and will not be approved.
* ISn’t~ ThIs <3 AnN0YiNg 2 ReAd? Non-standard capitalization and special characters are not allowed and will not be approved.
* Do not try to combine sentences into one word; Jane Lookatmysupercoolnewnickname Smith will not be approved.
* We review all name changes, so this may take a while. - You can, however, create a facebook page for business products and branding. This is critical for several reasons. First, you can create multiple facebook pages for multiple products. Facebook is quite adamant that you only have one personal profile (or one business account with a limited profile). However, your one personal profile can control several product pages which means we can have a webdiggin facebook page, and later on, create a separate facebook page for our snitch and bitch cafe. The second cool thing about facebook pages is that can have up to 25 administrators who can control the content of the page. (Not that we have 25 people, but enterprise level corporations would have various marketing people working on a project.) Even better, there are no links to the administrators managing the facebook page which means that you can safely create a division between your workplace and your personal life. The final cool thing about facebook pages is that they function pretty much like a personal facebook profile. You can create a facebook page by clicking on business at the bottom of any facebook page, or by clicking here:
“Every Facebook Page is a unique experience where users can become more deeply connected with your business or brand. Users can express their support by adding themselves as a fan, writing on your Wall, uploading photos, and joining other fans in discussion groups. You can send updates to your fans regularly — or just with special news or offers. Add applications to your Page and engage your users with videos, reviews, flash content, and more. Creating a Facebook Page is easy, free, and great for all types of businesses:
- Restaurants
- Bars
- Cafes
- Health and Beauty
- Pets
- Local Stores
- Parks
- Attractions
- Sports Teams
- Games
- Artists
- Musicians
- Politicians
- Non-profits
- And many more…
- Your personal facebook profile will only show a limited search listing on Google and other search engines (if requested), however a publicly listed facebook “page” will show the entire page. This works out better because when visitors click on a link to the webdiggin facebook page, it jumps to our full profile. You don’t need to login to your facebook account (like you would with a personal profile) and you don’t need to click any extra links to navigate to your full page profile. The only thing I can’t figure out is how to tidy up the link to our facebook page.
The example that Facebook gives on their facebook page help is quite tidy in comparison:www.facebook.com/pages/WebDiggin-An-Adventure-to-Make-Money-Online/8847658070?ref=share
- Facebook allows you to run social ads similar to Google AdWords to target facebook users. Seeing as how we already use Google AdWords and Yahoo Search Marketing, this would be an area for us to consider in the future.
Bottom Line: Facebook personal profiles are useful, but don’t give the range of marketing scope that a facebook page would allow, primarily because facebook page profiles are accessible in their entirety to a search engine, however personal profiles only display a limited search profile. We’ll keep you posted…
