Free Stock Photos to Use in Your Website

Free stuff is always nice. Free stuff that you can use to make money is even better. Setting up a WordPress site that you can run Google AdSense Ads on is quick and easy. (You can do set up a new website in under 5 minutes). When you’re running a content-based website to make money, sure there are lots of great templates out there, but make sure they you’re allowed to use them in commercial endeavours. And that includes the photos.

There are several websites out there that provide free photos for personal or commercial use. 2yi.net offers a list of different sites where you can get stock photography to put on your website. For example, the Morgue File is a repository of stock photos that you can use for personal and corporate (commercial) use. We’ve modified some photos from the Morgue File when we were designing the background for our Ripples of Kindness and Snitch and Bitch Cafe websites.

Why, yes, we are using the same basic wordpress template as this one from N Design Studio. Thank you for noticing. Limitations on how you can use a wordpress template are usually listed in the CSS style sheet that you can edit under Presentations > Theme Editor. This theme allows us to pretty much do whatever we want, except resell it.

By downloading and using this theme, you agree to the following terms:

- You may NOT resell this theme
- A link back to N.Design Studio and MangoOrange must be retained in the footer (either modified or unmodified)
- You may use this theme for personal or commercial projects
- You may modify, translate or distribute

Originally, we were thinking about using different themes on each of our website experiments, but we found that there’s a lot of variation in how well programmed the themes are. (Hint: If you do get a Free WordPress Theme, make sure it has the sidebar widgets already enabled, or you’ll need to do some coding to get your theme to work. And if you want all of your pages to have that sidebar attached, test-drive the template to see how they’ve designed it. We spent a significant amount of time trying to program in the sidebar into all of the pages - search results page - single post page - posts in the same category page - before we ditched the template and came crawling back to this one. )

Bottom line: Although there are a lot of themes out there, consider using the same theme for each of your sites and then changing the colours and background to make the sites look different. That way you don’t have to spend a lot of time figuring out how the theme worked. (Or worse, investing a lot of time tweaking the site, and then finding out a few days later that it’s missing a function that your other site had.) Just spent the time that you save looking for a different background picture and changing the colours.
