Tools to Find the Perfect Website Name
At first, I was trying to brainstorm website domain names using godaddy.com. I would pick my friends’ brains to come up with creative website names. I would type in the domain name, see that it wasn’t available, quickly glance at the alternative suggestions from godaddy (which I never liked), and then repeated the entire process by trying to think of other name possibilities.
Two hours later, it finally dawned on me that there’s an easier way - use a name generator online. Google led me to www.makewords.com - which was a heck of a lot easier. Type in some keywords, identify the kind of site name you want by selecting an appropriate theme, et voila: the website spits out a list of domain names that are currently available.
The good thing about makewords.com is that it offers a bunch of different templates / themes with various lists of words to append to the beginning or end of your keyword. to For example, the theme, advice, adds words like council, discover, experience, guide before and after your keywords and checks to see which combinations are actually available. If you find a domain name you like, you can click on the link to register. Makewords.com offers links to over 40 webhosts, including BlueHost and Yahoo. The service is provided free, presumably because they make a commission on the referal to the webhost. But, if you’re in the affiliate market business, chances are you’ll use your own links to get a commission to offset the cost of the domain name registration. The bad thing about makewords.com is that occasionally it would tell me a domain name was available but when I went to BlueHost, I would quickly find out it was already taken.
The Yahoo small business website has a nice domain name registration lookup. Unlike godaddy.com and makewords.com, Yahoo would suggest synonyms for keywords that I would type in. (The other tools mostly appended words before or after my keywords).
