Free Templates for Blogger and WordPress
There are lots of great blogs out there (not just our great travel blog or our wonderful Japanese Recipe blog). You could spend hours trying to develop your own unique look… but why would you want to? That’s the beauty of the internet – there’s lots of free stuff out there, including free templates for Blogger and WordPress powered blogs.
Hands down, there seems to be a lot more flexibility in design with the WordPress themes: WordPress Themes has a beautiful collection that can be indexed by subject, feature, or their WordPress Theme Sparkling Index (WTSI) – essentially a formula to pull out the gems of their collection. Some of the themes are published under creative commons licenses that allow you to use for non-commercial use, but many don’t specify any limits.
Blogger has a few free template sites as well: Pyzam and FinalSense both offer free templates, although I’m not sure some David Beckham and his buddies have authorized usage of their images.
After powering up our first blog, WhatTheDuck.ca, with Blogger, we learned the hard way how to tweak the code. WordPress was a breath of fresh air that allowed us to install Themey’s Apple Template for our gohanyo.ca recipe site (sans apples). Overall, I think we’re happier with WordPress – the themes seem more polished that what Blogger can offer and modifying the themes is a heck of a lot easier when you self-publish with WordPress. (Although, both involve a little bit of code-monkeying around).
