WebDiggin.com: An Adventure to Make Money Online

We’re working on a WordPress plugin that allows you to easily insert an excel table into your wordpress post. Here’s an example on our domain name price comparison site. (It’s a work in progress.)

In May 2007 we started our adventure to try to make money online. Several of  our friends and family members have started to ask us how we are doing; a few people were interested enough to try to make money online themselves. So we’re trying to help them by pointing out some of the things we’ve learned. We compared a lot of prices when we were trying to find a good domain name registrar and web host and we wanted to post the information up from our excel tables.

It’s not easy inserting excel tables into wordpress. Eventually we found Neil Crosby’s Standardista Table Sorting code, but it doesn’t seem to have been updated since 2006. We played around with it, but some of the sorting features didn’t work correctly for us.

Neil’s standardista table code uses a good chunk of Stuart Langridge’s open-source sorttable code so we looked at Stuart’s work. Stuart came out with a second edition of his code which solved some of our Standardista sorting problems. Stuart’s sorttable code allows you to make any html table sortable by adding some information to your table and using javascript to work it’s sorting magic. (Once the page is loaded, your browser doesn’t have to reload to sort the information. It can all be done on the client side.)

Finally, we used the open-source PHP Excel code to get the excel table into our posts.  Now, we can upload an excel table to our blog, add a short code like [wp-excel-table file="excel.xlsx"] into our post and it will automatically bring in our pretty excel table into our WordPress post.

When we started, we couldn’t find a WordPress plugin that lets you upload an excel file into your blog. We couldn’t find a WordPress plugin for PHP Excel. We couldn’t find a WordPress plugin to make a sortable table. So we tried to find a way to bring PHP Excel and Stuart Langridge’s sorttable code into WordPress.

It’s our first plugin so please be patient. We’re not code monkeys and until a year ago, we had no idea what php was. We hope to be posting our plugin later this month.
