I make a lot of ethical decisions in my daily life. I try to buy fair-trade. I try to avoid McDonalds because of their deforestation of rainforests and their treatment of the environment. I try to reduce my ethical footprint. Not everyone agrees with me, but these things are important to who I am. I like my soul. Heck, I’m a teacher - I wouldn’t feel right talking about social justice in the classroom, while sponsoring child labour in South East Asia afterschool.

So I was always a little bit nervous around the idea of marketing and sales. I didn’t want to become a car salesperson, corporate shyster, or any other cliche. Most of all, I didn’t want to push a product that I wouldn’t use personally - I didn’t want to lurk in back alleys or user forums singing the praises of Shell. But when I joined Commission Junction, I was happy to find products that I already use!

Sure, everyone people have audio or video conversations over the internet through their favourite IM program like Yahoo or MSN. But there are several things about Skype that put it head and shoulders above the competition. We’ve found that Skype is the best way to call home while you’re traveling. It’s saved our lives several times, but here are a few other reasons why we love it.

1. Skype provides secure communication channels for free computer to computer conversations. Big Brother is not watching. Sure you can chat over MSN with a headset and microphone to your friend overseas, but those conversations can be read and enjoyed by anyone along the internet line. Skype conversations between computer to computer are secure and encrypted. I have a few friends who work for secret agencies dealing with government issues and top-secret clearance. They can’t tell me what they do, but I do know they use Skype to secure their conversations between offices around the world. Skype’s website states the following in their help section:

Calls between Skype software users (PC-to-PC calls) are secure and encrypted. Calls to standard telephone or mobile numbers are encrypted until they reach public switched telephone network. .

2. Skype provides a fee service called SkypeOut that allows you to make phone calls from your computer to an actual phone number. You can make unlimited nationwide calls to the US and Canada for less than $3 per month. For example, I can call any phone number in Canada or the US from my computer for only $29.95 for 12 months, or $8.85 for 3 months (US and Canadian Residents only). Or, I can make international calls for as low as 2.1 cents per minute.

3. Skype provides a fee service called SkypeIn that gives you a personal phone number that lets you receive calls on your computer from anyone and anywhere in the world. With SkypeIn, people can call you from ordinary phones and you can answer calls whenever you are connected to Skype. A SkypeIn number (and free Skype Voicemail) only costs $38 for 12 months or $12 for 3 months. There are no extra fees or per-minute charges to receive the calls on Skype. Some people get a local phone number where they live so that friends can make local calls to reach you while you’re away overseas. Others get a phone number based in another countries to make it easier for people to reach you. For example, if your business is based in Boston, but most of your customers are from Brazil, you could buy a Brazil SkypeIn number and it’s a local call for them to reach you. (It’s important to know that you can’t use SkypeIn as a replacement phone because you can’t make emergency calls to 911 over the internet.)

Hands down, I prefer Skype over MSN and Yahoo for my computer telephoning needs. But the best part was finding a product that I didn’t feel bad about promoting.
