Our priorities are messed up. We should be working on our cashflow reports. We should be working on our niche mini sites using Josh’s $5 per day formula. We should be tweaking our affiliate marketing campaigns.
But, instead, we’re playing with our blog. We’d like to increase readership to this blog by running a contest. So, to prepare for that, we wanted to see how we were doing…
Mirror, mirror, on the wall. Who’s the fairest blog of them all?
Here’s what our blog looks like today:
| WebDiggin.com | April 11, 2008 |
| Google PageRank | 0 |
| Alexa Rank | 572,031 |
| Compete Rank | no data |
| Technorati Rank | 605,911 |
| # of pages listed in Google | 131 |
| # of incoming pages listed in Yahoo | 608 |
| 45n5 Rank | 325 |
| RSS Feed Subscribers | 7 |
| Page Loads (in Mar 2008) | 63 per day |
| Unique Visitors (in Mar 2008) | 38 per day |
| * First Time Visitors | 35 per day |
| * Returning Visitors | 3 per day |
At the end of Feb 2008, we were the 8,911,336th best blog in the world. Today, our technorati rank is down to 572,031. We improved by over 8 million spots on Technorati.
(It’s all arbitrary, of course. If you have little blogs that link to your blog posts, you can improve your rank. If you leave comments on other people’s blogs linking back to your blog, you can improve your rank. Still, it’s fun to watch…)
We changed the widgets we use to help us keep track of our score. We used to use Douglas Karr’s technorati widget, but it didn’t display properly in Internet Explorer. (Yes, we could have tweaked our CSS code, but we found a better plugin that we liked.)
In Oct 2007, AdesBlog recommended RankWidget to put up your stats (PageRank, Alexa, Technorati scores), but when we checked them out, RankWidget also wanted to provide us with free pop-under ads. We passed.
AdesBlog did however mention that they used to use Jon Lee’s ShowOff ranking widget for WordPress, but dropped it because it wasn’t working properly. It’s because Jon Lee modified his code so that it works on any website. It’s not just for WordPress anymore.
So we’ve installed the code and it shows off our Google PageRank, Alexa ranking, Compete ranking, and Technorati ranking. (Due to Google’s Terms of Service, the showoff ranking code can’t grab your Google PageRank directly. So, you have to enter in your own page rank and it’ll display it in the pretty bar graph.)
Bottom Line: We’re focusing on increasing readership on this blog. Why?
- Because it’s nice to have a conversation with other people, instead of having a conversation by yourself.
- Because we want to improve our Alexa ranking to open up more sponsored post opportunities (to fund our contests).
- We want to continue to build relationships with people and try to presell. Maybe we can get people interested in trying PPC affiliate marketing. If we can build that trust, maybe they’ll consider checking out our domain names mini website and buying a domain name through the link. We love BlueHost, but chances are, most readers of this blog already have their own web host for their blog.
Question: How did you build up your blog readership? (Any advice, aside from writing quality posts?)

it’s scary to think about all the ways you can rank a blog. I guess at the end of the day, it’s pagerank and readership that matters. What do you think?
