I should be working on my domain names mini-site. Or following Josh’s article marketing domination program and writing articles linking back to our bluehost review. I could be working on my cashflow reports, tweaking my search marketing affiliate campaign, or even cleaning up the SEO of this site.
Instead, I find myself blogging about Gorilla Sushi’s April contest.
Why? Because we we’re thinking about running a similar contest. We tested the water out a little with our $5 comment contest, but we wanted to expand into something bigger.
Gorilla Sushi got our attention because they are comment-friendly. (They’re a PR5 blog that has the link juice turned on in their comments.) So we went back for a visit today and noticed their contest.
- 1 ballot per comment made in April,
- 2 ballot per RSS feed subscription,
- and 25 ballots for a post linking to the site.
What’s neat is Gorilla Sushi gives you the code and pic they want you to use in your post…
Contest Rules
To gain entries into the contest, just do any of the following:
- Make a comment of value (not just “i agree”, etc.) on a post = 1 entry (remember to comment on all blogs)
- Subscribe to RSS via email = 2 entries (per blog you subscribe to!)
- Write a post about the contest on your blog (must include a link to this page and the links below to participating blogs) = 25 entries
Please note: If you are already subscribed to any of the sites below, you are already earning entries. Also, to get credit for posting about the contest, your post’s link must show up in the comments below or in the comments on one of the other blogs below.
How much easier can we make it? So you can sneak in with just one entry by simply posting a comment here, you can increase your odds by reading and commenting on a few more posts here and at one of the blogs below and maybe subscribe to a couple, or you can really up the odds and subscribe to all all of our blogs (which you’ll enjoy reading anyway), comment on a bunch of posts, and blog about this contest. The more entries you earn, the better your odds, of course. If you’re going to post about this contest, just grab the image and code from here.
The deadline for this contest is 12:00 AM April 1, 2008.
Who wants to pay you?
- Mr Javo
I think his code is out of date because it says the contest deadline is April 2008 when his website says it’s: 12:00 AM May 1, 2008.
The Good…
- $100 is a lot of money. That hooked our interest
- Depending on how badly you want the prize, you can do different things. Everything from leaving comments to making a post.
- The best part about Gorilla Sushi is that the links to your site from the comments you make all have the link juice turned on. This means, not only are you increasing your chances of winning $100 by commenting on his site, you’re also helping your blog out in search engine authority.
- He added a subscription form in his contest post to make it easy to get 2 ballots… but it didn’t work for us using firefox. Still, a nice idea…
- Anyone who is already a subscriber to his blogs is automatically entered into his contest. So, he rewards his loyal readers.
The Bad…
- We would have blogged about this anyways. But, the thing that almost made us stop was that Gorilla Sushi wanted us to link to all of his sites (9 sites, plus the contest link). Seemed a little much.
- He didn’t specify in the contest rules that he wanted the link juice turned on. (We left it on, anyways). The code he gives has the link juice turned on, but it would be easy enough to add a rel=”nofollow” tag in the links to his site. Asking for the nofollow to be left off was something we learned from Caroline’s Easter Egg contest.
- I’m guessing he ran this contest in March as well. If you were to run this contest for 12 months, $1200 seems like a lot of money. I wonder what kind of return on investment he gets. How is he funding his contests?
The Interesting…
- I think it’s neat that he supplied the code for us to use in the post.
- I suppose you could trick a contest like this. Just create a whole bunch of gmail accounts and register for the contest. If the point of the contest is to increase the readership of the blog, then that wouldn’t be too good. But, if the point of the contest was to make it seem like the blog was really popular, then, that might be okay.
- I wonder how hard it is to keep track of the ballot entries at the end. Looking through all of the comments, the RSS feed subscriptions, and any ping backs.
Bottom Line: Gorilla Sushi is running the contest that we were thinking about running next. So we’re having a closer look at what they do to learn from the masters. Another thing that’s impressive is how we have a PageRank 5 blog that still has the link juice turned on in the comments. We were wondering if at some point when you were big, you would want to turn on the nofollow in the links to save your pagerank. But, Gorilla Sushi doesn’t, and they still have a PR5. Role models, I tell ya.
Question: Does Gorilla Sushi’s contest interest you? Think it’ll work?
