We recently purchased Josh Spaulding’ ebook on Article Marketing Domination. Our goal is to get one of his $5 per day sites up and running by the end of April 2008.
One of the key ideas in Josh’s ebook is about doing some keyword research before you write your article for the article sites. We use the SEO Book KeyWord Suggestion tool and his system of identifying which keywords to target.
Josh outlines the importance of checking out the competition when you think you’ve found a good keyword. He points out how to use the Google Page Rank, Alexa ranking, and the number of pages linking to the site as indicators of how hard it will be to get a front page search engine result.
When we first starting following his article marketing domination game plan, we would find a list of keywords that we liked using the SEO Book KW tool. Then we would head on over to Google, type in the keyword, and one-by-one visit each of the top 5 sites to see what they looked like, what their page rank was, and how many backlinks they had.
It took a while to go through each of the sites. We kinda skipped that steps sometimes, but then we re-read Josh’s ebook, we realized why it was so important to do it.
Now, we’ve discovered that SEO Book also has a plugin for SEO Tools for Firefox which cuts down on our research time. (If you look carefully at Josh’s computer screen in this video, you can see he’s installed SEO for firefox as well. The plugin must have come out after he wrote this first ebook.)
The plugin can pull in a lot of information, but here are the things that we are interested in:
- PR: (Google PageRank) an estimated measure of global link authority
- Page Links: (Yahoo! link) shows a rough estimate of the total number of links pointing at a page
- Alexa: rank based on website traffic . Heavily skewed toward internet marketing and webmaster related resources.
If we use his example of dog training, here’s what the first few sites in Google look like:

Right below each listing, it’ll tell you the position on the page, the PageRank, the number of links to that page, and the Alexa ranking. We don’t need to waste time popping to each site to look at our Google toolbar to findout the page rank!
So, using Josh’s formula, we figure out which competition we could probably beat, and then we write our articles.
Bottom Line: The free SEO Tools for Firefox saves us time in figuring out which sites we can beat for a top ranking keyword. If you haven’t downloaded Firefox yet, here’s the link:
Question: Do you research your competition on a keyword before you target that keyword? How successful have you been at getting a front page search result?
