Piss off…
We’re currently experimenting with building traffic by running contests. (Ironically, we’re running a contest to find out what people think about running contests…) And how are we going to fund the prizes for our contests? Well, by taking sponsored post commissions, of course.
Lake Buena Vista Hotels asked us to pretty-please write about the Orlando Vista Hotel that is located close to all the Orlando attractions & convention center. Apparently, the 2008 American Urological Association Annual Meeting is an exciting and upcoming event in Orlando. And, of course, the Orlando Vista Hotel is the perfect choice to stay at while attending the event in the city.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. What does the Orlando Vista Hotel have anything to do with making money online?
Well, arguably, not a lot.
- The average reader on this blog (of which my RSS feed tells me there are 7) will probably not be planning on going to the 2008 American Urological Association Annual Meeting (also referred to as the AUA).
- They will also probably not be interested in finding a hotel that is close to Downtown Disney, Pleasure Island, House of Blues & City Walk.
- They probably won’t recognize that the Orlando Vista hotel is near the convention center, and is a unique area for socializing, dancing and just a prime location overall.
But a reader of this blog might appreciate the fact that sponsored posts are an effective way of using thousands of blogs to point to a specific website and improve search engine rankings. Which is what brings Lake Buena Vista Hotels and WebDiggin together.
They want the contextual links pointing to their sites. We want their cash to fund our future contests. The only question is whether this neutral-toned review will get approved by Pay Per Post.
People planning on attending the AUA convention would need to know that the Orlando Vista Hotel is conveniently located at the entrance to the Downtown Disney® Resort Area, and is one of the premier Lake Buena Vista hotels that offers the perfect location for vacationing families and business travelers.
But chances are, you don’t.
Bottom Line: If you are heading to the AUA convention, consider checking out the Orlando Vista hotel. Everyone else, thanks for putting up and stay tuned for future contests with cash prizes.
Question: Do you think potentially unrelated sponsored posts can damage a blog’s reputation? Or do the ends justify the means if you win the commission for this job in an upcoming contest?

Well, the post title is great link bait - I had to read it once I saw the title. It wasn’t what I was suspecting! Did the post get approved?
Personally I don’t have any problems with blogs having sponsored posts from time to time. They provide me with resources for FREE, so I should accept some advertising (including sponsored posts).
However, I don’t do sponsored posts myself (any more) because of the potential for the Google Slap.

Thanks, Stephen,
Yeah, we liked the title too. After all, what else would you title a sponsored post for the American Urological Association.
We might in the future get rid of the sponsored posts. But, right now we’re a page rank of 0 so we have nothing to lose. Plus, the traffic we get to this site is mostly through social networking or entrecards. Last month, we made around $75 in sponsored posts, but nothing from AdSense on this blog.
But we’re still thinking about the Google Slap…
