Recently, I read Ryan Cote’s post about the Affiliate Marketing Buying Trance. He had a different take on search marketing (PPC affiliate marketing) than my bible, Affiliate Millions by Anthony Borelli and Greg Holden.

Up until now, I’ve always launched Google AdWords and Yahoo Search Marketing campaigns with the link going directly to the advertiser. Ryan makes the argument that a good landing page that presells the visitor before they click onto the advertiser’s site is a great way to improve your return.

  • Anthony and Greg’s argument against sending PPC traffic to a landing page is they might not click on to go to the advertiser’s site. Why lose the traffic that you paid for?
  • Ryan’s argument for sending them to a landing page is that a proper landing page that presells the visitor will put them into a buying mood and make the ones that do go on to the advertiser’s site more likely to buy.)

What I like best about Ryan is how he was willing to share his experiences with a new guy. Here’s some of the wisdom he shared in his response to one of my comments on that post:

Direct linking can work…I’ve found some products that did very well for me. But I then turned these campaings into landing pages and made much more.

I’ve found direct linking works best as “testing the waters”. If you find a product sells this way, then you can be almost certain you’ll make more if you create a landing page for it.

But that assumes you write copy well and have a general idea of good page layout.

- Easy to read font like Verdana
- Pleny of white space
- Well-written copy that doesn’t scream “buy!”
- Relevant graphics
- etc.

But the best part of Ryan’s post was his lead for a free ebook by Ken Envoy of SiteSell:

http://mycps.sitesell.com

It’s long (140 pgs), but it does walk you through Ken’s philosophy of how to construct a landing website that presells. His free eBook walks you through sitesell’s Content > Traffic > Presell > Monetize model.

It’s an easy read (the text probably could have been condensed a bit), with the goal of preselling you to use sitesell’s web services. Given that we want to learn about web design, we’ll probably try to do it on our own (but, I imagine sitesell would say they could do it better for a nominal fee.)

Bottom Line: Both Ken and Ryan have given me a lot to think about to give this site more personality. We changed the landing page to add a brief description about what makes us different from the other money making blogs.

Question: Has anyone used a web service like sitesell to launch their website? Is it an effective way of not re-inventing the wheel?

No problem. Thanks for the help. Lately, I’ve been impressed at how approachable a lot of experienced bloggers have been to help the new guy.

Just think, one day I could be the not-new-guy…
