Sometimes you have to look at the big guys to figure out some best practices. The JohnChow and ShoeMoneys of the world. They’re in a completely different league than I am right now, but it’s good to have a destination in mind. I’ve often wondered why smaller blogs like myself have the social networking links and widgets from BlogCatalog and MyBlogLog, whereas the big money makers don’t.

At first, I thought it was because they don’t need to market themselves through the social grapevine, because they get so much traffic already. But now I wonder if it has something to do with pagerank and link juice. Josh Spaulding’s post about PageRank Leakage brought attention to me about the pagerank that is leaking out to sites that shouldn’t be getting pagerank. For example, your social networking links to your technorati page, your facebook page, your twitter page, etc.

Josh goes on to show you how to add the rel=”nofollow” tag to links to your contact pages, affiliate links (that’s a biggy for me), Search result pages… So I have lots to edit. Perhaps there’s a widget somewhere…

But, my question is the little sidebar widget that we all have showcasing the people who visit our page with blogcatalog accounts… Is there a way to slap on a nofollow on the widget? (I don’t mind sending people in my blogroll or comments the linkjuice, but probably not to a mybloglog page)

Maybe that’s why the big blogs don’t have MyBlogLog widgets on the side. Does anybody know?

Apparently those widgets that show your blogcatalog or mybloglog visitors do not leak pagerank. Josh mentioned that link juice isn’t passed on through javascript. Good to know.
