We tried to make money with Etology Ads. We were initially excited because Etology provided an alternate to Google Ads. Etology will place ads anywhere, including the kinds of sites that Google doesn’t want to be associated with. We weren’t too happy with Google at the time because we didn’t really feel that the ads Google was supplying us with matched the content of our site. (For example, we have a travel blog called WhatTheDuck.ca. Mostly, it’s about our adventures across South America, and we’re quite pleased when Google provides us with travel related ads. But WTF? Often times, it’ll get thrown by the duck, and we’ll get offers for duck blinds.)

Etology Ads - not always a good fitAfter having trying Etology in our sidebar to see what they could offer, we’ve decided to remove them from our site completely. I don’t think they had a lot of advertisers and the quality of the ads didn’t really match the content of our WebDiggin site. Plus, having our site accepted by Etology was a hassle. (If you don’t own your domain, Etology won’t accept your site. So blahblahblah.blogspot.com will be rejected because the name on the account won’t match the name on your Etology account.)

We are pleased so far with our Rubicon Ads. We decided to try the Rubicon Project because they provided access to a number of advertising companies and they appear to not have a minimum payout amount. (Unlike Google AdSense which requires you to have $100 before you receive your money). Here’s what we think so far…

Benefits of Rubicon Project:

  • Low minimum payout rate. Couldn’t find specific information about how much money you need to make before they cut you your commission, but on one of their forums, someone made $1.15 and he received his money.
  • Pretty dashboard with easy to read information about which ads are running and which sizes of ads are running.

Disadvantages of Rubicon Project:

  • Rubicon is offering us a lot of Google AdSense. Sure, they might have hundreds of other suppliers, but for the content on our sites, we’re getting a lot of Google. I can run Google AdSense on my own, so it makes me wonder whether their low payout is worth their cut on the top.
  • Your ads don’t always run. We labeled one of our widgets, Rubicon This! to keep track of where our Rubicon ads were. Sometimes the widget is empty - which means, sometimes, they’re not supplying us with ads. That’s a little curious. We always make sure we have a Google AdSense block somewhere on our site with code that we received directly from Google.

Bottom Line: Good bye Etology Ads, Hello Rubicon Project.
